Backflow Testing
We test 3/4"-1" residential and 3/4"-1.5" commercial backflow prevention assemblies including PVB, RP, DCVA. Our backflow testing service area includes: Goose Creek, Hanahan, Ladson, Moncks Corner, North Charleston, and Summerville, SC.
We are SCDES certified and routinely test in areas covered by: Charleston Water System, Berkeley Water, Goose Creek Water, Dorchester County Water, and Summerville Water.
Backflow Repairs
We repair 3/4"-1" residential and 3/4"-1.5" commercial backflow prevention assemblies incuding PVB, RP, DCVA.
In order to give you a repair price, we must test your backflow prevention assembly first.
Backflow Replacement
We replace 3/4"-1" residential and 3/4"-1.5" commercial backflow prevention assemblies including PVB, RP, DCVA.
Please note that some Water Providers no longer allow PVB replacements. Charleston Water System requires you to replace your PVB with an RP in the majority of their coverage area.
To give you a replacement price we must visit your property which incurs a dispatch fee that counts towards the replacement cost if we perform the work. If we think we can repair your existing assembly, we'll let you know while we're looking at it.
Backflow Termination
If you are no longer using your residential irrigation system - we can cap the lines below ground to discontinue service. Once the backflow prevention assembly is removed - you no longer have to worry about annual testing.
Please note that we cannot remove an assembly that controls something other than irrigation (such as pool fillers). We submit the paperwork to the Water Provider who will inspect the job to ensure your irrigation system is terminated.
If you'd like to backfill the hole - we'll credit you that portion of the invoice because you're saving us from making a return trip after the inspection.
Why Are backflow tests required?
Every home with an irrigation system is required to have a backflow prevention assembly. You may also be required to have a backflow prevention assembly if you have a swimming pool. Many businesses are also required to have a backflow prevention assembly for various reasons.
Backflow prevention assemblies are designed to prevent waste water, chemicals, and other hazardous substances from being pulled into the public water system from your home or office.
Your water provider requires that all backflow prevention assemblies be tested every year to ensure they are working properly.
A Quick Lesson On Backflow Terminology
You’ll see a lot of online information talking about PVB, RP, DCVA, water purveyors, etc.
SCDES (formerly SCDHEC): South Carolina Department of Environmental Services is the agency that administers the state’s cross connection program and certifies backflow testers.
Water purveyor = your water provider. Some of the larger water providers in our service area include Charleston Water System, Berkeley Water, Dorchester Water, Goose Creek Water, and Summerville Water.
DCVA = Double Check Valve Assembly. Most water providers no longer allow these for irrigation use.
RP = Reduced Pressure Principal Backflow Preventer. Used for irrigation and high hazard commercial facilities.
PVB = Pressure Vacuum Breaker. Used mainly for irrigation systems. Many water providers, such as Charleston Water, no longer allow PVBs to be installed for irrigation systems.

- Ensure Clear Access: Day of Service. Make sure your 3/4″ to 1″ residential or 3/4″ to 1.5″ commercial assembly is above ground and easily accessible. Note: We do not test fire service lines or below-ground DCVAs.

No, you don’t need to be home for us to complete your backflow test! However, if your backflow assembly is located inside a fenced area, please ensure the gate is unlocked and any pets are safely kept indoors during our visit.
Nope! If your irrigation system is officially retired, you don’t need to keep the backflow assembly. Swell Guy Plumbing can cap your inlet and outlet pipes safely underground and remove the assembly.
This service typically runs about $350 to cap the lines below ground and send in the papaerwork. If we return to backfill the hole after the Water Provider inspects the work there is a $155 backfill fee (not charged if you backfill the hole).
Just a quick heads-up: We’ll need your water provider account info before we start so we can verify the line is only used for irrigation. (We aren’t able to disconnect assemblies that double as pool fillers!) We’ll also send the information to your water provider so you stop receiving annual testing notices from them.
