Steven Dyson, owner and a licensed plumber at Swell Guy Plumbing Co, is a life long Lowcountry resident. Born and raised in Hanahan, SC and now calls Summerville, SC home. Graduated from The Citadel in 1995, served in the Army and Army National Guard, and became a licensed plumber in 1997.
You might think the term Swell Guy refers to a really good guy but it actually stems from joint swelling caused by auto-immune arthritis, thus the pufferfish in the logo. Steven was almost forced to give up plumbing in 2023 after receiving his spondyloarthritis diagnosis, but thanks to modern medicine he was able to keep doing the work he has always loved to do.

Some common questions we get from customers.
For safety and effectiveness, Swell Guy Plumbing Co does not clear sewers or drains from the roof. Instead, we highly recommend installing a 2-way exterior ground-level cleanout. This provides a much safer, more direct, and more reliable access point for clearing clogs.
At Swell Guy Plumbing, your safety and ours come first. For that reason, we do not operate drain cleaning equipment in confined or hazardous areas like crawl spaces, attics, or roofs. Operating heavy machinery in damp, tight spaces poses serious safety risks.
To resolve your drain issues safely and effectively, we recommend installing an exterior, ground-level clean-out. This provides safe, permanent access for proper drain maintenance.
Yes. If we have to pull (remove) a toilet to snake a drain line, an additional fee applies to cover the labor, resetting the toilet, and replacing the wax ring seal.
No, we highly discourage them. Chemical drain openers can severely damage your pipes and often don’t solve the root issue. If you have already used a chemical cleaner, please inform our plumber before they begin working. This allows them to take the necessary safety precautions to protect themselves and their equipment from hazardous chemical burns.
In the Lowcountry, sewer lines rarely run in a straight line from your home to the street. They often wind around property features, meaning your line could be sitting under a driveway, patio, or an 80-year-old oak tree. To give you an accurate, upfront price without any surprise costs, we need to map its exact path.
Bonus: If you move forward with us for the replacement, we will credit 100% of the locate fee on your final bill!
Yes. Your municipality requires a permit for this work, but it also serves as an important layer of protection for you. Because a local building official must inspect the new lines before they are buried, you can rest assured the job was done correctly and up to code. For your peace of mind and protection, Swell Guy Plumbing pulls all necessary permits for every sewer line replacement we perform.
Absolutely. Striking an underground utility line in the Lowcountry is incredibly dangerous and highly expensive to repair. Because safety is our top priority, we always coordinate with SC811—a free utility marking service—to map out underground lines before any excavation begins.
And we’ll put over 25 years of Lowcountry sewer & drain cleaning experience to work for you.
