Swell Guy Plumbing is a small, homegrown local plumbing company with over 25 years of Lowcountry sewer line replacement experience.
A Quick Note on Landscaping: We’re plumbers, we aren’t landscapers! We’ll backfill the trench neatly, but it will take a little time for the grass to fully grow back.
If your sewer line lacks the proper slope, avoid trenchless replacement. A correct grade is the most critical factor for a functional sewer system, and the only way to fix a poor slope is by excavating the old pipe and manually laying a new one.
Old Pipes: Cast iron, clay, and Orangeburg pipes have simply outlived their usefulness. By now, Orangeburg is usually collapsed, clay joints are packed with tree roots, and cast iron is typically rusted out at the bottom with roots breaking through the seams.
Improper Grade (Bellies): Sewer lines rely on gravity to work properly, so maintaining the correct slope is everything. Over time, roots can push sections of the pipe upward, creating “bellies” that trap waste. To put it bluntly: the nasty stuff only flows downhill.
Bad Joint Seals: We frequently see newer PVC lines that should be fine, but the joints weren’t glued properly during installation, giving roots an easy way in. The only way to fix a bad joint is to cut it out and replace it. If it’s just one spot, we can do a localized repair—but if the whole line was poorly glued, a full replacement is usually the smarter, more cost-effective move.

Some common questions we get from customers.
Sewer line replacement requires a permit to ensure the work is done safely, legally, and up to local building codes. The permitting process verifies that your contractor is a licensed professional. Additionally, it includes an official inspection by the city, giving you peace of mind that the job was completed correctly and won’t cause future issues.
Because no two yards are the same, and we want to give you an accurate upfront price rather than a blind estimate. Over the past 25+ years, we’ve learned that sewer lines can do some unpredictable things. If a line runs under a grand oak tree, beneath a paved driveway, or cuts through two neighboring yards to reach an 80-year-old tap, the scope of work changes dramatically. Locating the line from start to finish ensures we give you a precise, honest quote with zero hidden surprises.
First, they are a plumbing code requirement. Plumbing codes typically dictate a minimum of a two-way clean-out near your home’s foundation and a tap clean-out near the property line.
More importantly, clean-outs save you money and stress when a clog happens. They offer three major benefits:
Prevents Indoor Flooding: Removing the outdoor cap allows backed-up sewage to overflow outside rather than inside your home.
Free County Service: If the blockage is located at the municipal tap, the county will usually clear it for free.
Easier (and Cheaper) Access: Clean-outs give your plumber direct access to the line. Without them, a plumber might have to pull a toilet to snake the drain, adding labor costs to your bill.
We completely understand wanting to save on costs where you can! However, at Swell Guy Plumbing, we fully guarantee and stand behind our work. The absolute most critical part of a sewer line installation is ensuring a precise grade (slope). To confidently warranty our work and ensure your system flows perfectly for years to come, our team needs to handle the excavation from start to finish.
No, unfortunately, we cannot. Swell Guy Plumbing only pulls permits for work that our team physically performs. For liability and legal reasons, we cannot sign off on or assume responsibility for unpermitted work done by others.
And we’ll put over 25 years of Lowcountry sewer line replacement experience to work for you.
