Please Use Licensed Gas Contractors

Natural gas is a great fuel for heating things. We use natural gas to heat our homes, heat or water, and to cook with. This plumber prefers a gas stove for cooking, a tankless gas water heater for showering, and a gas furnace stay warm on a cold night.

But, gas lines have the ability to be deadly so we highly encourage you to use properly licensed plumbers for any gas work that you need performed. Swell Guy Plumbing Co also recommends obtaining a gas permit for any new gas line installation. And if you have gas fixtures in your house, please make sure that you have carbon monoxide detectors installed. Carbon monoxide can be more hazardous to your health than a gas leak because you can’t smell carbon monoxide.

The state of South Carolina requires that anyone working with natural gas be properly licensed. I get it, you think you can save a few dollars by using a cheaper “handyman” to fix your gas lines, but are the hazards to your health really worth the few dollars you might initially save?

Swell Guy Plumbing takes your health very seriously. We don’t cut corners when we’re working with natural gas. Natural gas work is our highest liability service and we prefer our customers stay alive for many years to come, because you pay our salary. Being properly licensed means that we know how to safely install gas lines and fixtures so that you don’t have to worry about the hazards that can happen when gas lines are not installed correctly.

This plumber’s advice is to always think about you and your family’s health, so DON’T DIY or pay the handyman to fix anything that carries or uses natural gas.

Please also note that Swell Guy Plumbing will not obtain a gas permit for work that has been completed by anyone else. Many people think they can fix a gas leak or install a gas fixture, then have a plumber obtain a gas safety test permit – this is not true. A gas safety test does not cover repairs or installations that have been perfomed by a homeowner or unlicensed gas contractor trying to bypass having a licensed gas plumber do the work. Swell Guy Plumbing will only obtain a gas permit for work that we’ve performed.

You can check a company’s license status by visiting the SCLLR website and performing a licensee search.

Frequently Asked Questions

Some common questions we get from customers.

Yes, a permit is required. For your safety and peace of mind, Swell Guy Plumbing Co. handles the entire permitting process for every gas line installation we perform.

Generally, minor gas leak repairs do not require a permit. However, if any section of the gas line needs to be replaced, obtaining a permit is highly recommended (and often legally required). Because working with gas carries significant safety risks, we strongly advise hiring a licensed gas plumber for all repairs and replacements.

No, Swell Guy Plumbing specializes exclusively in natural gas systems. We do not work with propane.

No. Swell Guy Plumbing does not work on gas lines in manufactured or mobile homes. We recommend reaching out to Westbury’s Hardware for an experienced mobile home gas line professional referral.

No, Swell Guy Plumbing does not work on gas lines for food trucks, trailers, or any other mobile platforms. We specialize exclusively in stationary residential and commercial properties.

Because many local gas suppliers discourage the use of copper piping for gas lines due to safety and longevity concerns, Swell Guy Plumbing specializes in replacing copper lines rather than repairing them. We highly recommend upgrading to galvanized steel or OmegaFlex TracPipe—two industry-leading materials that offer superior safety, durability, and reliability for your home.

No. Swell Guy Plumbing only obtains permits for work that our team has personally performed. We cannot legally or professionally certify work done by outside parties.
