Leaking from the Spout or Shower Head: For single-handle valves, this is typically resolved by replacing the cartridge.
Leaking from the Handles: We repair and replace stems and handles for Gerber and Kohler 2/3 handle systems. For other brands—especially legacy or older valves like Speakman and Chicago Brass—we recommend a full valve replacement.
Handles Hard to Turn: For single-handle valves, a cartridge replacement usually does the trick. For 2- or 3-handle valves, we service Gerber and Kohler by replacing the stem, seat, and handles. For all other brands, especially discontinued models, we recommend a full valve replacement.
Gerber: 2 and 3 handle tub and shower valves – all brass body and stems.
Some common questions we get from customers.
Most standard valve replacements take about 4 hours. However, if you have an older home—especially one with plaster walls or hard-to-access piping—the job can take up to a full day. We typically access the valve from behind the shower (like through a closet or bedroom wall) to protect your bathroom tile.
While conversion plates (or remodeling plates) exist, Swell Guy Plumbing generally advises against them.
Here is why: these extra-large plates rely entirely on a caulk seal to keep water out of your walls. Over time, that seal can degrade, leading to hidden water damage. Furthermore, altering the setup can throw off the alignment of your existing tub spout.
If you live in an older home with beautiful, historic tile that you want to save, we have a much better solution. We specialize in replacing old parts with high-quality, modern 3-handle systems (like Gerber valves). This updates your plumbing to modern reliability without destroying your wall or risking future leaks.
No, the tub drain and overflow assembly are not included in a standard tub valve replacement.
These are two entirely separate parts of your plumbing system. Replaced from behind the wall, the shower valve controls your water flow and temperature. The tub drain, however, requires access underneath or inside the tub itself and often requires two technicians to properly align and seal. Because they require different access points and labor, they are priced as separate services.
And we’ll put over 25 years of Lowcountry tub & shower valve experience to work for you.
