Whole-House Shut-Off Valves: Do you know how to quickly turn off your water during a plumbing emergency?
Most newer homes (built after 2010) have a main shut-off valve located in the garage or another easily accessible indoor spot. However, many older homes (pre-2000) have their valves buried out in the dirt—or rely on old gate valves that can easily snap or leak when you try to turn them.
Every home needs a reliable, working main shut-off valve. If you don’t have one, your only option is buying a water key and knowing how to shut it off at the street meter.
Toilet Shut-Off Valves & Supply Lines: If your toilet starts leaking, you need to be able to turn off the water to that specific fixture immediately—without shutting down water to your entire home. We can replace worn-out, frozen, or leaking toilet supply stops (shut-off valves), or install a brand-new one if your old plumbing is missing it entirely.
For maximum reliability, we always recommend burst-resistant braided stainless steel supply lines. To prevent future leaks and property damage, we automatically replace the supply line whenever we install a new toilet, reseal a wax ring, or replace a fill valve.
Sink Supply Lines & Shut-Off Valves: A leaky faucet is annoying, but a burst supply line can flood your home in minutes. Having a functioning under-sink shut-off valve (supply stop) means you can easily isolate a problematic faucet without turning off the water to your entire house. We recommend checking these lines every year and proactively replacing faucet supply lines every 5 years to prevent unexpected failures.
Ice Maker Valves & Lines: Most modern refrigerators feature built-in ice makers and water dispensers. To ensure optimal performance and protect your home, Swell Guy Plumbing recommends installing an ice maker valve equipped with a hammer arrestor (which is required by plumbing code). This should be attached to a solid $1/2$-inch water supply line.
For the connection from the shut-off valve to your fridge, a 3-to-5-foot braided stainless steel supply hose is ideal. We strongly advise against running long lengths (like 10 feet) of thin plastic tubing, especially when connected to a unreliable, self-tapping saddle valve.
Pro Tip: We recommend inspecting your ice maker supply hose every year and replacing the line every 5 years to prevent unexpected leaks!
Washing Machine Valves & Hoses: Washing machine valves are prone to leaking over time—usually around the handle or stem—and can eventually fail to shut off entirely. Because these valves experience sudden pressure drops, they also require hammer arrestors to protect your pipes. To prevent catastrophic bursts, we highly recommend upgrading to braided stainless steel washing machine hoses. It is best practice to inspect your hoses annually and replace them every 5 years.
Please note: For your home’s safety, we do not recommend or install “all-in-one” supply valves that have a permanently attached supply tube. Because flexible supply lines wear out over time and require periodic replacement, separate pieces are much safer and cheaper to maintain. If we are replacing a toilet or faucet for you and find an integrated valve, we will replace it with a standard, high-quality separate valve and line to ensure your system is serviceable down the road.
